The first mechanical, automated optical sorters were developed in the 1930s and were quickly adopted for bean sorting. The benefits of such systems were immediately obvious. Since then, the technology has been applied to the sorting of fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, meat, coffee, tea, and grains.
